About Us

TEWLS was created under the Commonwealth Government's Access to Justice program in 1996. TEWLS is currently funded by the Commonwealth Attorney General's Department and the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet to provide referrals, legal advice, casework and community education to all women in the Top End of the Northern Territory. 

TEWLS is currently staffed by a team of three legal and two non-legal staff. TEWLS' staff and management committee bring decades of legal and non-legal experience from across the Territory and Australia, with particular focus on the needs of women in the Top End.

TEWLS is a member of the following organisations:

  • National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLC)
  • NT Association of Community Legal Centres
  • NT Council of Social Services
  • Women's Justice Network (WJN) (formerly the Women in Prison Advocacy Network [WIPAN])

Volunteering

If you are interested in supporting TEWLS, you can do so by:

  • Becoming a member
  • Volunteering on our management committee 
  • If you are a solicitor or barrister, you can volunteer at our Wednesday evening advice clinic or by providing pro bono assistance
  • As a legal student by undertaking your practical legal training with us

 TEWLS has a vacancy for a Solicitor or Senior Solicitor with energy, passion and a commitment to women's issues. The position provides holistic, timely, high quality and culturally appropriate legal services to women in the Top End of the Northern Territory.

As a member of a small dynamic team, your legal practise will include legal advice, casework, community education and submissions on issues salient to our clients on civil law matters, including family law.

TEWLS client base includes Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander women, women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and women in prison.

The position requires an eligibility to hold or be eligible to hold a NT Practising Certificate, and high-level understanding of the issues affecting women in the Top End. Salary packaging is available.

The position is based in our Darwin office, with full-time contact hours preferred.
